Council to consider banning Ocean Boulevard parking in downtown Myrtle Beach year-round

Parking on a portion of Ocean Boulevard could be suspended year-round if
Myrtle Beach City Council approves a motion on Tuesday.
However, most members of the
Oceanfront Merchants Association said they would like to see parking allowed on
the Boulevard, from Seventh Avenue North to 14th Avenue North, the group’s
president Chris Walker said.
Currently, vehicles are not allowed
to park on that section of Ocean Boulevard between March 1 and October 1.
Walker said OMA members were OK with
extending the amount of time that vehicles are banned from parking on Ocean
Boulevard, but said they wanted some type of presence during the slower months.
“During the winter, they feel like
if there’s not something out there it looks bad,” Walker said. Having cars
parked in front of a business “helps to draw people in.”
Members of the Downtown
Redevelopment Corp. discussed the option during their annual retreat and City
Council members asked Walker to get a consensus from OMA before they made a
decision.
The issue will be discussed during a
council workshop 9 a.m. Tuesday at City Hall, 937 Broadway St. in Myrtle Beach.
