Horry County Schools students to field test Smarter Balanced assessment
Students at 29 schools in Horry County are scheduled to take an assessment
aligned with the Common Core State Standards, as a proposal moves through the
state Legislature that would negate the results.
South Carolina belongs to the Smarter Balanced testing consortium, and the
state’s schools are to fully implement Common Core in the fall. A proposal
originally intended to repeal the standards would keep Common Core in the
classroom but would remove the state from the testing group.
Four schools in the district were chosen to field test the assessment, while
25 schools volunteered to participate, said Heather Sheehan, director of the
district’s assessments. The field test will be taken in addition to the
Palmetto Assessment of State Standards.
“We are proceeding, moving forward with the same level of urgency and
enthusiasm, assuming that the scores will count,” said Teal Britton, HCS
spokeswoman.
Schools can choose one of four time periods in which to take the assessment,
Sheehan said. Smarter Balanced was paid for through a federal grant.
“The Smarter Balanced assessment is just a field test,” said Dino Teppara,
S.C. Department of Education spokesman. “We provided guidance to field test
sites that we’d continue participating in the field test until the General
Assembly acts.”
