Names submitted for new elementary schools in North Myrtle Beach

Names submitted for new elementary schools in North Myrtle Beach

Names for three new North Myrtle Beach elementary schools were recommended to the Horry County school board Monday night, although no vote was taken.
The names are Ocean Drive Elementary School for what is now North Myrtle Beach Primary School, Riverside Elementary School for North Myrtle Beach Elementary School and Waterway Elementary School for North Myrtle Beach Intermediate School.
Students in the North Myrtle Beach attendance area attend the same primary, elementary and intermediate school, but the primary school (pre-kindergarten through first grade) and elementary school (grades two and three) are overcrowded, while the intermediate school (grades four and five) has room to spare. The three schools are being converted to K-5 schools to better utilize the facilities, which will open in their new configuration in the fall.
A naming committee, which included representatives from each school’s area, unanimously chose the names, said Joe Burch, Horry County Schools planner. He said the Ocean Drive name is a throwback to a school that was in the area in the 1950s and ’60s, while Riverside is the school closest to the Waccamaw River, and Waterway is the closest to the Intracoastal Waterway.

The selection of school colors and mascots has not been made, Burch said, but that will be discussed by the naming committee, with input from the cluster’s school improvement councils and advisory board.
